Difference Between Stock & Semi-Stock Kitchen Cabinetry

When you are remodeling your kitchen, one of the first things most people think about is their new cabinets. Cabinetry is one of the most important factors in determining the aesthetic tone of a kitchen. What you choose sets the stage for all of the other kitchen design elements like countertops, hardware, appliances, and more. Determining what cabinetry best for both your practical and aesthetic preferences can be challenging with so many different options available. While many people would love to have custom cabinetry, it may not be the best option for your budget or timeline. When this is the case, you still have many options but those options generally fall into two categories: custom and semi-custom cabinetry.

Stock vs. Semi-Stock Cabinetry

Stock Cabinetry

Stock cabinets are ready-made cabinets that are mass-produced in standard styles and measurements. While you may not have many customization options with stock cabinetry, and they can be more challenging to fit in custom areas, there are many beautiful and well-made stock cabinetry options. Even with stock cabinetry, there can be a huge price range and some of the cheaper options tend to use materials that are not particularly high-quality or known for their durability. For these reasons, when choosing stock cabinetry it is important to do your research into the materials and manufacturing methods that are used.

Semi-Custom Cabinetry

Semi-custom cabinets are very similar to stock cabinets in that they are mostly already manufactured. But, there are some general design elements that can be customized such as material, finish, and some cabinet dimensions. They tend to be comparably priced to stock cabinets and less expensive than custom cabinets, making them an excellent option.
